10MW Run-of-River Hydropower Project
Clean electricity generation from a perennial Kenyan river — displacing diesel and grid emissions while delivering reliable power to underserved communities
This project proposes the development of a 10 megawatt run-of-river hydropower facility on a perennial river in Kenya. Unlike large reservoir dams, run-of-river systems divert a portion of river flow through a turbine and return it downstream — minimising land flooding, habitat disruption, and community displacement. At 10MW, this project sits firmly in the small hydro category, where additionality is strong: projects of this scale in rural Kenya genuinely struggle to reach financial close without carbon revenue as a supplementary income stream. The electricity generated displaces diesel generators and fossil-based grid power, creating verifiable, measurable emission reductions that can be registered under the Gold Standard or CDM-derived methodologies. This is a concept-stage project actively seeking an experienced engineering developer and carbon finance partner to take it from feasibility to financial close.

Run-of-River · No Large Reservoir · Low Impact
A weir and intake structure diverts a portion of river flow through a penstock to a powerhouse turbine. Water is returned to the river downstream, preserving aquatic ecosystems and downstream water rights for communities and agriculture.

Methodology
Grid Emission Factor · Diesel Displacement
Credits are calculated using the Kenya grid emission factor applied to each MWh of clean power generated. The AMS-I.D small-scale renewable methodology is well-established and widely recognised by institutional credit buyers.
benefits
